Alt text is a small thing you can add to your content, but one of the most useful.
It’s a short description that’s attached to your image for screen readers to use when describing it to their users. It’s also used by search engines to categorise what your content is about, but that’s just a happy side effect.
Most people who use alt text are blind or have low vision. Adding it means they can experience your post the same way everyone else does.
If you skip it, both Instagram and Threads will auto-generate something, but it tends to be vague (think “people, nature, text”). Writing your own takes a few seconds and is much more useful.
This carousel will talk you through how to add alt text on Instagram and Threads posts, but it’s much easier than you think.
Save this and add alt text to your next post 💡
